I am Julie Ackerman, an artist and eco-warrior dedicated to transforming waste into stunning works of art. Based in Weston-super-Mare, I founded The Art Of Recycling to combine my passion for creativity and sustainability. Explore my journey, discover unique pieces, and join me in celebrating the beauty of reimagined materials.
Brands In the Sand
This piece features rusty cans, including one from 2001, discovered on Sand Bay beach. They are set in sand, accompanied by plaster mouldings of branded drink bottles such as Pepsi, Iron-Bru, and Coca-Cola. This artwork reflects the enduring human habit of littering, highlighting how the nature of waste has evolved over time.
Lost Toys
This artwork showcases 'Found Objects' collected from the streets of Weston-super-Mare, including fallen branches from Clarence Park. It reflects how some forms of littering are unintentional, often resulting from children outgrowing and no longer valuing their toys
Waste Pipes
This artwork captures my family walking along Sand Bay beach, engaging in litter picking. The waste pipes, crafted from Pringle Tubes, spill plastic waste collected during our clean-up efforts. The plastic pieces have been washed and sorted into different colours. During storm surges or heavy rainfall, overflow pipes release sewage into the estuary, which is why we often find plastic tampon applicators and cotton bud sticks on the beach.

The Anthropogenic Hand
Modelled on my own hand, this piece reflects human influence on nature. It highlights anthropogenic climate warming, the loss of species and habitats, and the overall degradation of our planet's health.
Mother Nature
This artwork represents my vision of human activity and its influence on the natural world. A blue Mother Nature is depicted lying over a dry stream with dead fish, a dead bird on her knee, and surrounded by discarded, broken waste. This piece highlights the escalating global issue of waste. As humans we consume plastic waste, a credit cards worth every week!
Sit On The Fence
Inspired by the idiom, this piece reflects government inaction regarding ecological extinction. It highlights the reluctance to take decisive action on critical environmental issues.

Coastal Erosion (Sculpture, 2022)

This sculpture was made during the storms Dudley, Eunice, and Franklin that hit the UK in February 2022. The dark-grey skies, strong winds, and bad weather caused a lot of damage.
As an artist, I like to reuse materials. The storm-damaged house in this sculpture was made using a miniature house making kit I designed, using materials from food and drink containers.
This piece represents the impacts of climate change on our world and how we live. It's a wake-up call for the future that we need to address.
Plastic Bottle Domes
These small Plastic Bottle Domes feature the intricate Flower of Life design, meticulously hand-painted onto a round wooden base. Each dome is a testament to the commitment to protect our home, the planet, and the precious Life within it.

★★★★★
These delightful Miniature Houses were meticulously crafted over several weeks in a workshop led by Julie Ackerman, utilizing the Art Of House Making Kit. Sabine personalized her creation with wallpaper in the distinctive colours of her business, Nature's Soulful Treatments, and mounted it on a wooden base. Kathleen added intricate "00" (1:72 scale) figures, handmade furniture, a washing line, and even installed a light for a touch of technical flair!
